The Château Cantemerle Haut-Médoc Grand Cru Classé 2020 is an exceptional Cinquième Grand Cru Classé (Fifth Growth) from the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Situated in the commune of Macau on the southern edge of the Haut-Médoc, Château Cantemerle is renowned for producing elegant, Cabernet Sauvignon-led wines that consistently deliver outstanding value among the classified growths. The estate comprises approximately 95 hectares of silica-gravel soils with vines averaging 40 years of age, a terroir ideally suited to producing wines of finesse, structure, and longevity.
The 2020 vintage is regarded as one of Bordeaux's finest recent releases, combining superb ripeness with remarkable freshness and balance. The blend consists of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot. Following hand harvesting and meticulous sorting, the wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, with 40% new oak, resulting in a beautifully layered wine with concentrated black fruit, refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and exceptional elegance. The château describes 2020 as a "solar vintage" with remarkable smoothness and harmony, offering both immediate appeal and excellent ageing potential.
Tasting Notes
Colour:
Deep ruby-purple with brilliant garnet reflections.
Nose:
Intense aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, cassis, black cherry, violets, cedar, graphite, liquorice, toasted oak, and delicate hints of spice and cocoa.
Palate:
Medium to full-bodied with concentrated flavours of ripe cassis, blackberry, dark plum, black cherry, cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite, dark chocolate, and subtle baking spices. Fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity create a harmonious, elegant structure with outstanding precision.
Finish:
Long, refined, and persistent with lingering dark fruits, cedar, mineral notes, liquorice, and polished oak.
