Château Pichon Baron Les Griffons de Pichon Baron Pauillac 2018 is the distinguished second wine of the renowned Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) Château Pichon Baron. Introduced with the 2012 vintage, Les Griffons is crafted from carefully selected parcels located on the estate's deep gravel soils near the Gironde Estuary, where Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes. While sharing the same meticulous vineyard management and winemaking philosophy as the Grand Vin, Les Griffons offers a more immediate yet unmistakably Pauillac expression with exceptional purity, energy, and ageing potential.
The outstanding 2018 vintage benefited from a hot, dry summer following a challenging spring, producing grapes of exceptional concentration and ripeness. The wine is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Merlot, aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, with 60% new oak. It displays generous layers of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, cedar, graphite, and refined oak spice, supported by powerful yet polished tannins and vibrant freshness. Rich, harmonious, and beautifully structured, Les Griffons 2018 is approachable after decanting while possessing the ability to age gracefully for over two decades.
Tasting Notes
Colour:
Deep, almost opaque ruby with intense purple-black reflections.
Nose:
Elegant aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry, cedar, graphite, cigar box, subtle vanilla, toasted oak, and delicate floral nuances.
Palate:
Full-bodied and beautifully structured with layers of cassis, blackberry, dark plum, and black cherry, complemented by notes of cedar, dark chocolate, graphite, tobacco, and refined French oak. Powerful yet silky tannins and fresh acidity create outstanding balance, depth, and precision.
Finish:
Long, refined, and persistent with lingering dark fruits, cedar, graphite, subtle spice, and classic Pauillac minerality.
