The Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2011 is a classic Southern Rhône blend from the renowned Clos du Mont-Olivet, one of the benchmark family estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Founded in 1932 by Séraphin Sabon, the estate has earned an international reputation for producing elegant, traditional wines that faithfully express the diverse terroirs of the appellation. With vineyard holdings across prestigious lieux-dits including La Crau, Montalivet, Bois Dauphin, Les Cabanes, and Palestor, the estate crafts wines celebrated for their balance, complexity, and exceptional ageing potential.
The 2011 vintage is produced from a traditional Southern Rhône blend centred on Grenache, supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and other permitted Rhône varieties. The grapes are hand-harvested, partially destemmed, and fermented using traditional methods before maturing for approximately 18 months in large oak foudres, allowing the fruit to retain its purity while gradually developing texture and complexity. Now with over a decade of bottle age, the wine has evolved beautifully, displaying mature Rhône characteristics while maintaining remarkable freshness and structure. Wine Advocate awarded the 2011 vintage 90 points, highlighting its balance and classic style.
Tasting Notes
Colour:
Deep garnet red with brick-red highlights.
Nose:
Elegant aromas of black cherry, blackberry, kirsch, dried herbs (garrigue), liquorice, black olive, leather, cedar, tobacco, and sweet baking spices.
Palate:
Full-bodied yet beautifully balanced with layers of ripe black fruits, plum, raspberry compote, liquorice, pepper, dried thyme, and earthy spice. The tannins have softened with bottle age, creating a silky texture supported by lively acidity and savoury mineral notes.
Finish:
Long, refined, and persistent with lingering dark berries, leather, cedar, garrigue, tobacco, and subtle spice.
