The Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2016 is an outstanding expression of one of the Southern Rhône's finest vintages. Produced by the esteemed Clos du Mont-Olivet, a family-owned estate established in 1932 by the Sabon family, this wine embodies the domaine's commitment to traditional winemaking and exceptional terroir. With vineyards spread across many of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's most celebrated lieux-dits, including La Crau, Montalivet, Bois Dauphin, and Les Cabanes, the estate consistently crafts wines renowned for elegance, complexity, and longevity.
The 2016 vintage, widely regarded as one of the greatest in modern Châteauneuf-du-Pape history, is produced from a traditional Southern Rhône blend dominated by Grenache, complemented by Syrah, Mourvèdre, and other permitted Rhône varieties. The grapes are hand-harvested, partially destemmed, and fermented using traditional methods before ageing in large seasoned oak foudres, preserving purity of fruit and terroir expression. The result is a wine of remarkable concentration, freshness, and precision, capable of ageing gracefully for decades. Critics awarded the wine 94 points from Jeb Dunnuck and 93 points from Wine Spectator, praising its balance, depth, and classic style.
Tasting Notes
Colour:
Deep ruby red with brilliant garnet highlights.
Nose:
Complex aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, fig, black cherry, spice box, tobacco, cedar, dried herbs (garrigue), liquorice, and subtle floral nuances.
Palate:
Full-bodied and beautifully structured with layers of ripe blackberry, cassis, plum, raspberry, liquorice, black pepper, Provençal herbs, and savoury spice. Fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and outstanding mineral tension create exceptional balance and elegance, despite the wine's impressive concentration.
Finish:
Long, refined, and persistent with lingering dark fruits, graphite, tobacco, garrigue, spice, and mineral freshness.
