The Clos du Mont-Olivet Lirac 2019 is a refined Southern Rhône red from the prestigious Lirac AOC, crafted by the acclaimed Clos du Mont-Olivet. Established in 1932 by the Sabon family, the estate is internationally recognised for its benchmark Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. Sourced from vineyards on the right bank of the Rhône River, directly opposite Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this Lirac offers exceptional value while showcasing the elegance, complexity, and age-worthy character synonymous with the estate.
The 2019 vintage is a blend of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, and 5% Cinsault, sourced from approximately 12 estate parcels near Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres and Saint-Geniès-de-Comolas. The vineyards, with vines averaging 20–30 years of age, are planted on sandy soils strewn with flint and the famous galets roulés (large rounded quartz stones). The grapes are hand-harvested, fully destemmed, and fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks. The wine is matured using a combination of 45% large oak foudres, 40% concrete tanks, 13% acacia casks, and 2% older French oak barrels, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve purity and texture.
Tasting Notes
Colour:
Deep ruby red with brilliant garnet reflections.
Nose:
Expressive aromas of black cherry, red plum, raspberry, wild herbs, baking spices, lavender, liquorice, and subtle earthy notes.
Palate:
Medium to full-bodied with vibrant flavours of ripe blackberry, black cherry, raspberry, plum, Provençal herbs, black pepper, and liquorice. Silky tannins and lively acidity create excellent balance, while the diverse ageing vessels contribute complexity without overshadowing the fruit.
Finish:
Long, fresh, and elegant with lingering dark berries, savoury herbs, gentle spice, and mineral nuances.
