The Domaine de l'Hortus Pic Saint-Loup Grande Cuvée 2020 is the flagship red wine of Domaine de l'Hortus, one of the pioneering estates of the Pic Saint-Loup AOP in the Languedoc. Founded by Jean Orliac in 1978 and now managed by the second generation of the Orliac family, the estate has earned an outstanding reputation for producing elegant, terroir-driven wines from the dramatic limestone slopes beneath the Pic Saint-Loup and Hortus cliffs.
The Grande Cuvée 2020 is crafted from 50% Mourvèdre, 40% Syrah, and 10% Grenache, sourced from two exceptional limestone terroirs with contrasting microclimates—one at the foot of the southern Hortus cliff and the other beneath the northern face of Pic Saint-Loup. The vineyards are planted on ancient limestone scree soils rich in iron oxides, providing excellent drainage and ideal conditions for slow, balanced ripening. The grapes are destemmed and gently crushed before undergoing a long maceration with soft extraction to refine the tannins. The wine is then matured for 12 months in French oak barrels (new, one-year-old and two-year-old barrels), adding complexity while preserving fruit purity.
Tasting Notes
Colour:
Deep ruby red with intense garnet reflections.
Nose:
Complex aromas of ripe blackberry, black cherry, plum, blood orange, bay leaf, liquorice, black pepper, Mediterranean herbs, cedar, and subtle floral notes.
Palate:
Full-bodied, concentrated, and beautifully structured with layers of blackberry, cassis, dark plum, sweet spice, dark chocolate, garrigue, and mineral notes. Fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity create remarkable balance, elegance, and ageing potential.
Finish:
Long, persistent, and refined with lingering dark fruits, liquorice, spice, herbs, and chalky minerality.
