Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2002 is a distinctive vintage from one of Italy's most respected traditional wine producers. Originating from Abruzzo, this wine showcases the character of Montepulciano through the estate's commitment to biodynamic viticulture, traditional winemaking and extended bottle maturation.
The 2002 vintage was unusually cool, producing wines with pronounced acidity, restrained fruit concentration and remarkable elegance. Initially considered austere in its youth, the wine was held back by the Pepe family rather than released immediately. Its subsequent library release allowed it to develop greater complexity and demonstrate the ageing potential of this challenging vintage.
Made from 100% Montepulciano, the wine follows the estate's traditional low-intervention philosophy. The grapes are carefully hand-harvested and processed using indigenous yeasts, with fermentation and maturation in glass-lined cement tanks. Bottled without fining or filtration, it preserves the natural character of the fruit and its distinctive terroir.

Tasting Notes:

Colour:
Lustrous mid-ruby red with subtle orange and garnet reflections from bottle maturation.

Nose:
Delicate aromas of dried strawberries and fresh red berries, complemented by cinnamon, dusty rose and subtle earthy nuances.

Palate:
Elegant and lifted, revealing pure red berry flavours with refreshing acidity and a delicate flinty mineral character. Gentle tannins and a subtle natural sweetness provide balance, while its lighter structure gives the wine an appealing sense of finesse.

Finish:
Persistent and vibrant, with lingering red berries, gentle spice and mineral freshness, finishing with a distinctive refreshing acidity.
