Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2003 is an impressive mature Italian red wine from one of Abruzzo's most celebrated traditional producers. Originating from Torano Nuovo, this vintage demonstrates the remarkable ageing potential of Montepulciano and the estate's commitment to preserving the authentic character of its vineyards.
The 2003 growing season was exceptionally warm and dry, producing concentrated grapes with rich fruit character and substantial structure. Despite the challenging heat, the estate's old pergola-trained vines helped protect the grapes from excessive sun exposure. According to the winery, the Montepulciano maintained elegant tannins and vibrant acidity, allowing the wine to retain balance and freshness.
Produced using Emidio Pepe's traditional low-intervention philosophy, the grapes are hand-harvested and carefully processed before spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine is matured in glass-lined cement tanks for approximately two years before bottling without fining or filtration. Extended cellar ageing further develops its complexity and depth.
