Felline Sum Salento Susumaniello 2021 is a distinctive and characterful southern Italian red crafted from 100% Susumaniello, a rare indigenous grape variety from Puglia that was once close to extinction. Produced by Felline, one of the leading estates championing native Apulian grapes, “Sum” highlights the elegance, freshness, and complexity possible from this historic varietal.
The vineyards are located near the Torre Guaceto coastal nature reserve in Salento, where Mediterranean breezes, warm sunshine, and limestone-rich soils help preserve freshness and aromatic lift. Unlike many heavily extracted southern Italian reds, Sum focuses on balance and purity, delivering vibrant fruit, spice, and silky texture without excessive heaviness.
The 2021 vintage offers excellent concentration combined with freshness and refined tannins. Vinified and matured primarily in stainless steel with additional bottle ageing, the wine preserves the varietal’s authentic fruit character and savory Mediterranean personality.
Susumaniello has gained growing recognition among wine enthusiasts and sommeliers for offering an intriguing alternative to Primitivo and Negroamaro, combining dark fruit richness with herbal complexity and vibrant acidity. Reddit wine communities often describe the grape as spicy, earthy, and excellent value for adventurous Italian wine drinkers.
