The Jade Gross Piano Piano 2024 is a limited-production Rioja DOCa red wine crafted by Australian-born winemaker Jade Gross in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Rioja Alavesa. Named after the Italian phrase "Piano, Piano" ("slowly, slowly"), the wine embodies Jade's philosophy of patient vineyard stewardship, long-term collaboration with local growers, and minimal-intervention winemaking. As the first wine created when the Jade Gross project began, it remains one of the estate's signature expressions of modern Rioja.
Produced predominantly from Tempranillo sourced from a 0.5-hectare bush-vine vineyard in Laliende, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, the vines are over 40 years old and planted on gravelly alluvial soils at an altitude of approximately 450 metres. The grapes were hand-harvested on 19 September 2024, with 70% destemmed and 30% whole bunches fermented in open-top stainless steel tanks. The wine was then matured for 12 months in French oak barrels, predominantly 500-litre barrels, preserving fruit purity while adding texture and complexity. Only 2,330 individually numbered bottles were produced, making this a highly collectible Rioja.
Tasting Notes
Colour:
Deep ruby red with vibrant purple reflections.
Nose:
Expressive aromas of ripe red cherry, blackberry, red plum, wild raspberry, violet, dried herbs, sweet spice, and subtle toasted oak.
Palate:
Medium to full-bodied with flavours of black cherry, raspberry, blackberry, and red plum layered with fine spice, mineral nuances, and hints of cocoa. Fine-grained tannins and lively acidity create a beautifully balanced wine with elegance and precision, while the French oak contributes subtle complexity without dominating the fruit.
Finish:
Long, refined, and persistent with lingering dark berries, gentle spice, floral notes, and mineral freshness.
