Marqués de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Rioja 2012 750ml is the iconic flagship wine of Marqués de Murrieta and one of the most prestigious expressions of Rioja. Castillo Ygay is produced only in selected exceptional vintages and comes exclusively from the La Plana vineyard, a 40-hectare plot planted in 1950 at 485 metres above sea level in the highest part of the Finca Ygay estate.
The 2012 vintage is a blend of 81% Tempranillo and 19% Mazuelo (Cariñena). The grapes were manually harvested and vinified separately before being matured for an extended period: the Tempranillo spent 34 months in American oak, while the Mazuelo was aged for 34 months in French oak. After blending, the wine continued ageing for another 20 months in concrete tanks before being bottled in May 2019.
The result is a highly refined and complex Rioja with black cherry, ripe plum, tea leaves, cedar, Mediterranean herbs and dried flowers, supported by polished tannins and remarkable freshness.
Tasting Notes
Colour:
Deep ruby-red with youthful garnet reflections.
Nose:
Full and complex, with aromas of black cherry and ripe plum, followed by tea leaves, cedar wood and Mediterranean herbs over a background of dried flowers.
Palate:
Deep and beautifully structured, with ripe dark fruit, polished tannins and layers of spice, cedar, herbs and mineral character. The wine is harmonious and refined while retaining excellent freshness.
Finish:
Exceptionally long and persistent, with lingering ripe fruit, dried flowers, cedar, herbs and elegant savoury notes.
