Opus One 2021 is a prestigious Napa Valley red wine produced at the Opus One estate in Oakville, California. Created from the vision of Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, Opus One combines the traditions of Bordeaux with the distinctive character of Napa Valley.
The 2021 vintage experienced exceptionally dry conditions, with the second-lowest rainfall recorded in Opus One's history. Lower water availability resulted in below-average yields, while the fruit developed exceptional concentration and flavour. Harvest began on 31 August and was completed on 24 September.
The 2021 blend is particularly Cabernet Sauvignon-driven, with 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec. The wine underwent 19 days of skin contact and was aged for 19½ months in new French oak, contributing depth, structure and finely integrated oak character.
Tasting Notes
Colour:
Deep and concentrated ruby with a vivid, youthful appearance.
Nose:
Seductive aromas of crushed cassis, blackberry and black cherry, layered with violet, vanilla and baking spices.
Palate:
Bright and fresh on entry, with concentrated dark-fruit flavours. Fine-grained tannins create an exceptionally plush and creamy mid-palate, while black tea and liquorice add complexity.
Finish:
Long and lingering, with dark chocolate, liquorice and concentrated black-fruit notes. The wine has the structure and balance to develop beautifully with careful cellaring.
